This surgical specialty concentrates on the anatomy, function, disease, and treatment of the eye. Eye surgeons, or ophthalmologists, treat a wide variety of eye problems, from common vision deficiencies to more severe conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, or eye cancer. Ophthalmologists also perform surgery to correct deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system and the orbit (the bony cavity surrounding the eye).
